The English Language Institute

The University
of Pittsburgh occupies a 120-acre campus in Oakland, the educational center of the city.
The ELI classrooms are located in the landmark 42-story Cathedral of Learning. Across the
street are art and natural history museums, libraries, theaters and concert halls, a
botanical garden and a large public park. The ELI was established in 1964 and thus is one
of America's oldest intensive English programs. The program is designed for people
interested in studying in a U.S. university and places an emphasis on the skills needed
for academic life; however, the classes are general enough to be of use to people wanting
to improve their overall English ability.
