School Introduction

The Putney School is located on a beautiful rural campus in southeastern Vermont, one of the New England states in the northeast part of the US.

In this beautiful setting, students follow a challenging academic program that prepares them for college -- and for life beyond. In addition to intellectual learning, students study studio arts and music, work a daily job to help the school, and live together with students from many different states and countries.

Students at Putney are very busy, very challenged, and very thoughtful: the school is like a village, where everyone has a voice, and something to contribute. Most people who visit are surprised, and delighted, and they agree that The Putney School is unlike any other school they have visited,
Courses Offered

The academic program is challenging and broad: in addition to basic courses at many levels in math, English, science, history, languages, and arts, there are advanced and specialized courses combining, for example, arts & science, or science, history, & agriculture, Seniors have the opportunity to pursue independent courses, present an exhibition, or spend time off campus working in a field of interest.

We have a full ESL program for students at different levels. These ESL classes receive academic credit towards graduation.

Everyone on campus chooses an activity for afternoons, usually outdoors: soccer, skiing, gardening, horseback riding, or mountain biking, for example.

All students choose an evening activity as well, such as ceramics, weaving, photography, blacksmithing, or filmmaking.

Students finish each semester with two independent projects of their own design. In this way,not through final exams, they show mastery of what they have learned .
